The drug’s manufacturer, Pfizer, said Friday that it will begin selling Viagra, the active ingredient in the pill, as a way of combating the cost of healthcare and preventing health problems.
“We believe that this drug is a safe and effective way to treat erectile dysfunction,” said Eli Lilly and Company Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Andrew W. Bengal. “We look forward to making Viagra available to the millions of men in the United States.”
Erectile dysfunction is the inability to achieve and maintain an erection adequate enough for sexual activity, according to the World Health Organization.
“We are committed to increasing the availability of medicines to all men in the United States,” said David A. Kiely, Ph. D., chairman of the division of erectile dysfunction at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
A survey of more than 100,000 American men who suffer from erectile dysfunction found that 40% were concerned about their ability to achieve or maintain an erection for sexual activity.
“Many of us may feel embarrassed, but we all need to be treated properly for erectile dysfunction,” said Susan B. Komen, M. D., a professor of urology at Northwestern.
Erectile dysfunction is characterized by a persistent problem with the ability to achieve and maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.
Viagra’s main active ingredient, sildenafil, belongs to the class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5). PDE5 inhibitors work by blocking an enzyme, phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), that breaks down a chemical called cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). cGMP is a messenger molecule that helps men with erectile dysfunction deal with erectile dysfunction, which is characterized by the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse.
By inhibiting the action of PDE5, Viagra allows more blood to be pumped into the penis, facilitating an erection.
Viagra is also a treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension, or high blood pressure in the lungs, which is a high blood pressure that may cause blood clots in the lungs.
The drug is available in 25mg, 50mg, and 100mg tablets. The drug is not recommended for women, children, or those who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
